Gina Carano says she truly wanted the chance to fight in the UFC, but that door never opened. Now, with her comeback against Ronda Rousey set for May 16, she is making it clear that this matchup survived only because Rousey kept pushing after the formal negotiations started going sideways.
Before the two were booked to headline the first MMA card on Netflix, there was talk that Rousey vs. Carano could happen under the UFC banner. That never materialized, and Carano admitted she was not the one steering those talks anyway. MiddleEasy has already covered the recent Rousey and Carano faceoff in New York and Rousey’s broader push around MVP MMA 1, but Carano’s latest remarks gave a clearer look at how this fight finally came together.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Carano said:
“I really wanted to. I really wanted to do the UFC, make that walk.”
She also made clear she cannot say how close that idea got this time, adding:
“I don’t know. That would be between Ronda and Dana. She really led the way. She led the way one thousand percent. I just said yes.”
Her explanation was straightforward. Carano said Rousey was the one leading the effort, while she mostly stayed outside the negotiations and agreed once the fight was put in front of her.
“I really wanted to do the UFC, to make that walk, but I think that Ronda, she led the way… she led the way 100%. I just said yes.

Gina Carano says the suits got in the way of UFC talks
Carano then explained how the fight stayed alive when the formal back-and-forth was not moving, saying:
“And then when their negotiations weren’t going anywhere, she called me personally. And then we had dinner and we actually talked about it, because we call them the suits. The suits can get in the way.”
That is a pretty revealing detail. It suggests this was not just a clean promotional booking from the jump. It needed the fighters themselves, especially Rousey, to cut through the noise and keep it alive. For a matchup that has floated around for years, that part fits.
Carano also admitted this fight was not something she had been actively chasing for years, even if the moment now feels right. She said:
“She’s been following me and tracking me and probably knows a whole lot more about me than I know about her. And this is a fight that she’s always wanted.”
Then she closed with the strongest line from the interview, saying:
“It wasn’t like something I had to do, but now that I’m doing it, I’m so glad. I’m so glad that I’m doing it. Now I feel like there’s no stopping me.”
