Gilbert Burns lost a bet of $50,000 to Ali Abdelaziz after Islam Makhachev’s victory over Charles Oliveira at UFC 280.
Oliveira went into the outing looking to reclaim the title he lost on the scales in his last bout against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 in May. He entered as the betting underdog with the less experienced Makhachev expected to win the vacant lightweight belt. ‘Do Bronx’ came out firing from the start but failed to get going as Makhachev imposed his game plan to snap the Brazilian’s 11-fight win streak.
Gilbert Burns challenged Ali Abdelaziz to a $50,000 bet for UFC 280
On Oct. 12, Burns took to his Twitter to predict his fellow Brazilian Oliveira would defeat Makhachev inside three rounds: “Oliveira 3 round finish.”
Makhachev’s manager, Abdelaziz, responded to Burns arguing he did not believe the conviction, “Behind closed door you don’t believe this.”

‘Durinho’ doubled down on his stance and challenged Abdelaziz to a $50,000 wager to prove he was serious. Abdelaziz issued a fiery response dodging his offer and cautioning him about a ‘boss.’
“So $50K bet is on? @AliAbdelaziz00,” wrote Burns.
“Save your money, the boss will kick you out if you lose this money and you know who I’m talking about,” responded Abdelaziz.

Burns pays Abdelaziz $50,000 after losing the bet
Following Makhachev’s dominant win over Oliveira, Burns lived up to his word and shared a screenshot of him transferring Abdelaziz the bet money of $50,000. Abdelaziz seemingly turned down the cash, reasoning that as a Muslim, he can’t place bets.
“Did you receive? @AliAbdelaziz00,” asked Burns.
“Keep your money,” Abdelaziz added. “Brother Muslim can’t bet you know this.”

Makhachev is now the UFC undisputed lightweight champion and is currently on an incredible 11-fight win streak, including finishes in each of his last five bouts. His next target would likely either be the reigning pound-for-pound king Alexander Volkanovski or top-ranked lightweight contender Beneil Dariush.
