Khabib Nurmagomedov found himself in an unexpected situation recently when Frontier Airlines removed him from a flight traveling from Las Vegas to San Francisco. Known for his calm demeanor in the octagon, Khabib had to navigate an entirely different kind of challenge during his journey to corner fighters at UFC 311.

Frontier Addresses Viral Incident

The incident unfolded when Khabib, seated in an exit row, was asked to relocate. The flight crew reportedly felt he might not meet the requirements to assist in an emergency. When the discussion didn’t resolve, he was removed from the plane altogether.

The viral incident caught the attention of fans and critics online, with many questioning the airline’s actions. Some speculated whether bias played a role, as Khabib himself later wondered aloud. To address the situation, Frontier Airlines released a statement to MMA Fighting. They clarified their decision, stating that safety regulations guide passenger placement in exit rows, emphasizing that the decision was not discriminatory.

“On Jan. 11, 2025, as flight 4401 from Las Vegas to San Francisco was preparing for departure, a flight attendant initiated the customary briefing for exit row passengers. Customer Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was seated in an exit row, was asked multiple times if he was willing and able to assist in the event of an emergency. According to the flight attendant, Mr. Nurmagomedov did not respond, despite repeated attempts, which placed him in non-compliance with FAA requirements. The flight attendant informed Mr. Nurmagomedov that he could be moved to a different upgraded seat or exit the plane.

“Videos circulating on social media platforms do not capture this interaction, and instead show a subsequent interaction after a gate agent entered the plane and reiterated the option to be reseated. As a result of the customer’s initial unresponsiveness and repeated declinations of a seat change, he was asked to deplane per airline and FAA policy. The decision to deplane the customer was in no way related to his ethnicity and we have refunded him and his traveling companions for their flights.”

Despite the disruption, Khabib managed to secure another flight and arrived in San Francisco in time for his duties at UFC 311. This weekend, he will be in the corner for Islam Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov as they face high-stakes matchups.

Khabib, a retired champion with an undefeated record, remains a major figure in MMA. From defeating big names in his career to becoming a UFC Hall of Famer, he has now shifted focus to coaching, mentoring fighters like Makhachev and Umar.

While the flight incident added an unexpected twist to his week, Khabib’s attention is back where it belongs, helping his fighters prepare for battle on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
