Former UFC fighter Mateus Mendonc suffered an injury that no man should ever have to experience.

After wowing MMA fans in 2022 with a 48-second knockout of Ashiek Ajim on Dana White’s Contender Series, Mendonc has had a rough go of it — losing three straight inside the Octagon, including a split decision defeat against Jesus Aguilar in February. He was subsequently released by the promotion.

As it turns out, losing his job was the least of Mendonc’s problems this year. During a recent interview with AgFight, ‘Bocão’ revealed that during a fairly routine BJJ training session, he ‘suffered a blow to the pelvic region and ended up fracturing his penis.’

“I went to train jiu-jitsu at my teacher’s gym the day before I returned to Sao Paulo,” Mendonca said. “During the second roll, [my partner] hit my private parts with his knee when I was trying to pass the guard. I felt an incredible amount of pain and ran to the bathroom. It started to burn. But then the pain went away and I kept going.”

“A month later, training normally without pain, I started to notice some problems. I started to move and there was a lump. So I went to the hospital. When I got there, the doctor did an exam and immediately transferred me to another hospital for surgery.”

The Former UFC Competitor Encourages Everyone to Wear a Cup, Whether Training or Competing

While wearing protective gear like cups is fairly commonplace in competition, jiu-jitsu athletes tend to avoid wearing them during training sessions since it can restrict their movement on the mat.

After learning the hard way, Mendonca strongly encourages everyone to wear protective gear anytime contact is involved because you simply never know when someone is going to accidentally break your penis.

“It’s a good idea to warn everyone,” Mendonca said. “All the guys who train jiu-jitsu, grappling, MMA, anything that involves contact: wear a cup to avoid accidents. This had never happened to me. It was the first time and look what happened. I had to have surgery. I had to be out of action for two months.”
