Dustin Poirier would like to see Justin Gaethje welcome Conor McGregor back to the Octagon from injury.
Dustin Poirier Wants To See McGregor vs. Gaethje
Poirier was recently interviewed on ESPN’s “DC & RC” and offered his thoughts on some matchups he’d like the UFC to book moving forward.
One such bout is a lightweight fixture between McGregor and Gaethje, two men Poirier is very familiar with inside the Octagon.
“The Diamond” said watching the two duke it out inside the cage would be like a “car wreck.”
“Justin Gaethje vs. the return of Conor McGregor,” Poirier said (via MMA Junkie). “The hype, the buildup – somebody’s going to sleep. I mean, you’re tuning in for a car wreck – a head-on collision, and I want to see it.”
Poirier has fought McGregor inside the Octagon three times, and Gaethje once. He defeated Gaethje in their 2018 meeting via fourth-round TKO.
As for McGregor, he suffered a defeat to the Irishman in their first meeting back in 2014, suffering a first-round TKO.
However, in their two rematches in 2021, Poirier avenged that defeat with a pair of TKO wins. The first being a second-round TKO via strikes, and the latter resulting in a Doctor Stoppage after McGregor broke his leg during a kick.
Now, McGregor is on the mend, expected to return to fighting action later this year or early 2023. Poirier himself has been discussed as a potential opponent.
But with the stacked list of names at 155 pounds, McGregor will have absolutely no trouble finding a dance partner for when that day comes.
