Through my grappling experience and lifetime I have found that one of the most difficult positions to escape and survive is side control. I have seen this bottom position cause problems for grappler as low as White Belt and as high as Black. Take a closer look at the position, conceptually, it’s simple in nature. Your opponent/partner is positioned perpendicular to you and your job is to disrupt his progress by quickly creating space and then eliminating it. What seems to make this position so difficult to escape are the many dynamic variables that are available to the top man. So when in doubt, seek the advice of an expert!
Ryron Gracie may just solve all your problems…
When in doubt, rely on a Gracie who admits the sole purpose is often be “just to survive” during combat (sporting or otherwise). Now, despite your feelings for anything Gracie, we must give them props for having some sick defense. Our advice? Why not use the Bruce Lee philosophy and “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” Take a look at Ryron’s superb defensive techniques and add them to your grappling repertoire. I’m sure your fellow teammates will thoroughly be bored and frustrated with your stalling and stories of your home juicing adventures.
