UFC CEO Dana White has officially announced two major title fights set to headline this summer. At UFC 317 on June 28 during International Fight Week in Las Vegas, Ilia Topuria will face former champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title. Then, on August 16, middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis will put his belt on the line against unbeaten contender Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC 319 main event at the United Center in Chicago. Both matchups promise to deliver high-stakes action and are among the most anticipated fights of the season.
Du Plessis has established himself as a dominant middleweight champion, facing elite competition in the 185-pound division. His upcoming defense against Chimaev promises a clash of contrasting styles.
Chimaev, known for his explosive finishes, enters with a perfect record, making this his first opportunity to claim UFC gold. His recent performances have solidified his status as a top challenger.
Topuria, the former featherweight champion, aims to capture the lightweight belt after Islam Makhachev vacated it to pursue welterweight glory. Oliveira, a former champion, seeks to reclaim the 155-pound title.

Historic Championship Battles in Middleweight and Lightweight Divisions
Du Plessis won the middleweight title at UFC 297 in January 2024, defeating Sean Strickland via a close decision. He solidified his reign with a unanimous decision in their rematch at UFC 312 in February 2025, proving his championship caliber.
His earlier victories include a knockout over Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 and a stoppage against Robert Whittaker at UFC 290, showcasing his power and unorthodox striking. These wins have cemented his place as a leading middleweight.
Chimaev, with an undefeated 14-0 record, has secured six stoppage wins in eight UFC fights. His first-round submission of Whittaker at UFC 308 earned him this title shot, marking his first U.S. fight since 2022.
Topuria’s move to lightweight comes after winning the featherweight title with a knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298. ‘You have these two guys Charles Oliveira and Ilia fighting, and they can fight for the title,’ Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz said, highlighting the stakes for the vacant belt.
Oliveira, who held the lightweight title from 2021 to 2022, lost it to Makhachev at UFC 280. His recent submission victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 309 reestablished him as a top contender, setting up this clash with Topuria.
The UFC 319 main event was initially considered for UFC 317 but was finalized for August due to scheduling adjustments. UFC 317’s lightweight title fight anchors International Fight Week, promising a thrilling summer spectacle.
UFC 319: Du Plessis vs. Chimaev and UFC 317: Topuria vs. Oliveira deliver blockbuster title fights, with Du Plessis defending his middleweight crown against Chimaev’s relentless aggression and Topuria facing Oliveira’s submission expertise for the lightweight belt. These matchups pit proven champions against formidable challengers, with the potential to reshape their divisions and define the winners’ legacies as elite UFC champions.
