Douglas Silva de Andrade received a six-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, leading to the cancellation of his bout against John Castaneda at UFC Fight Night 253 on March 1 2025. The 39-year-old Brazilian, with a 29-6 record, tested positive in a February 14 sample, per UFC.com. The event took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. “To ensure that UFC athletes do not consume contaminated supplements like this one that can lead to adverse findings, all UFC athletes are educated that the only dietary supplements they should consume should be 3rd party tested by one of the UFC ADP’s approved dietary supplement 3rd party certification programs… While there was no evidence of the intentional use of furosemide by Silva da Andrade, he did not follow the UFC ADP directions to UFC athletes to ONLY consume approved 3rd party tested supplements.”
“Silva da Andrade’s 6-month suspension began on February 28, 2025, the date on which he was placed under a provisional suspension and removed from his upcoming card. Under the UFC ADP, he will be eligible to compete again in UFC events on August 28, 2025. However, CSAD has also provided this result and other information to the Nevada Athletic Commission, which retains jurisdiction over this case due to Silva de Andrade’s scheduled bout in Nevada at the time this sample was collected.”
Why a Tainted Supplement Cost Andrade His UFC Return
Andrade was set to fight Castaneda at a 140-pound catchweight, but the bout was canceled post-weigh-in when Combat Sports Anti-Doping notified UFC of a positive test for furosemide, a prohibited diuretic. Both fighters made weight, but Andrade lacked medical clearance. He submitted a dietary supplement for testing, which did not list furosemide but tested positive at SMRTL labs. An unopened container of the same supplement also contained the substance, suggesting contamination.
The suspension began February 28 2025, making Andrade eligible to return August 28 2025. The Nevada Athletic Commission may review the case, but no further action is reported. Andrade’s UFC record stands at 7-6, with notable wins over Marlon Vera and Renan Barão. His last fight, a loss to Miles Johns in June 2024, marked his sixth UFC defeat.
