Donald Trump praised Dustin Poirier and his performance against Islam Makhachev.
During an appearance on Theo Von’s podcast This Past Weekend, the former U.S. president lauded ‘The Diamond’ as a fighter who never gives up while using Poirier’s performance against the reigning lightweight champion this past June as a prime example.
“Oh, he’s great… He’s a warrior! That last fight he had. Whether you like it or not, he is a warrior,” Trump said.
“No, he didn’t lose that fight. He really… Man, his fighting was tough. He was tough and didn’t expect that same fight. But he oftentimes, well he makes people suffer. There’s no question about it. You know, he’s all, he’s a pro. He’s a professional. As that fight went along he just got stronger and stronger. And he was getting pounded, and he was going to be choked out about four different times and he just wouldn’t let it happen.”

Earlier this year, Trump dubbed Khabib Nurmagomedov the greatest fighter of all time—a statement Conor McGregor later said would be a “campaign-ending decision” for the GOP nominee. Considering McGregor’s last two losses came against Poirier, we can probably expect ‘Mystic Mac’ to deliver another anti-Trump tirade on social media in 3…2…
Dustin Poirier Does Not Walk to Walk Away on a Loss
As Poirier stepped into his third and final lightweight title opportunity at UFC 302, many—including himself—believed it would be his final dance inside the Octagon. However, it looks like that’s no longer the case.
Poirier has not yet booked a return fight, but the former interim champion is keeping the door cracked open in case something enticing comes knocking.
“Inside of me it’s like I’m battling it,” Poirier told MMA Junkie. “I feel like I can’t leave. I can’t walk away. I know I still can do it. I know I can beat these guys. It’s like an internal struggle. It’s a battle for sure. I want to fight. But we’ll see.
“Nothing is guaranteed here. I don’t know what kind of battle I’m going to be in if I lose two-in-a-row. I’ve never lost two in a row. Nothing is guaranteed in this. If I do walk away I definitely want to walk away on a high note and a win. I don’t want to walk away on an L.”
Do you want to see Poirier make the walk one more time for his 40th career fight, or is it time for the Lafayette, Lousiana native to lay down his gloves?
