Dominick Reyes Stands By Slow UFC 327 Win Over Johnny Walker After Fans Rip Fight, Says ‘It Was a Good Technical Fight’

Reyes heard the criticism after UFC 327 and still says the measured fight against Johnny Walker was the right call

Dominick Reyes got the win at UFC 327, but he was never going to win over everyone with the way it happened.

Reyes beat Johnny Walker by split decision on the main card in Miami, and the reaction came fast because this looked nothing like the firefight many expected from two dangerous light heavyweights. The fight was cautious, slow in stretches, and short on the kind of chaos usually attached to both men. If you missed the result itself, Reyes already banked the official win over Walker. What came after was the real debate.

Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Reyes said:

“I did expect him to be a little more aggressive, but this is super f—king dangerous game, man. Anything he did, I expected. I wasn’t caught off guard… it was a good technical fight.”

That was his read on the fight from the start. Reyes said the matchup changed because Walker was not giving him the entries he expected, which forced him to adjust instead of chasing a wild exchange. He explained it like this:

“It was on the fly, and I was making adjustments for my coaches. The game plan got switched up because I expected him to step into range more. I had to force the action and wobble him a few times. I don’t think I overgameplanned or anything like that. I was fighting a guy who was getting in, not going — and it’s difficult to fight like that.”

That does not make it a fan favorite, but it does explain why Reyes was not interested in turning the fight into a reckless brawl. He also made it clear there was a physical reason for that restraint. Reyes said:

“He’s super dangerous. If I get crazy, I could run into something. I just had a concussion six months ago — I probably shouldn’t have taken the fight, but I did. I fought a very technical, clean fight and dominated all three rounds.”

That is a different lens than the one fans used while watching. The crowd wanted a banger. Reyes wanted a smart night, a clean result, and a step forward in the rankings after another high-pressure spot in the division. His last fight before this one was the road back itself, and now the bigger UFC 327 picture has him back inside meaningful light heavyweight conversations.

He closed with the most direct explanation of the whole night, saying:

“You know, being Dominick Reyes, people expect me to go all crazy — go for the knockout or get knocked out, but I have a son and I have to come home with two checks more than anything. Getting two checks means more than being entertaining.”

That is the split in how this fight will be remembered. Fans saw a flat fight. Reyes saw a disciplined win over a dangerous opponent, and in a division that keeps shifting after Jiri Prochazka’s title loss to Carlos Ulberg, he is clearly more interested in staying relevant than giving away moments for applause.
