Ahead of his bout with Junior dos Santos this weekend in Wichita, Derrick Lewis is feeling unusually calm.
“It don’t even feel like fight week,” said Lewis in his pre-fight media scrum. “I guess I’m just too relaxed….I never felt like this before during fight week.” Lewis would go on to talk about his never ending battle with hating media, before the most important question was asked; has he gotten his free Popeye’s chicken yet.
“Really still embarrassed to go up there and ask for my lifetime membership of free chicken,” Lewis would state, much to the shock of those watching. “It’s completely different when you go in the store and ask for my free chicken.” Derrick Lewis was given a lifetime supply of free chicken from Popeye’s ahead of his title fight with Daniel Cormier. This was after he went on record saying the real reason he took the fight against DC to defend the honor of Popeye’s chicken.
Lewis then went on to discuss the less important things; his fight preparation. When asked about his conditioning, he said that he has mostly been focusing on conditioning the last few months. “That’s really all I’ve been focusing on the last few months, is conditioning. No technique or nothing like that, just conditioning.” He proceeded to fire back at critics, saying “I’m 280. So they try to move around being 280lbs…let’s see if they don’t get tired.”
Derrick Lewis is set to face off against Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC Wichita, this Saturday night, live on ESPN+.
