Dennis Hallman talks about UFC’s early days of visiting Japan and how unofficial everything was

You can’t say that you’ve really lived until you meet a woman with an extreme phobia of the popping noise a can of biscuits make when they’re opened. Heads up British readers, not those biscuits. In rural areas of the US, entire families are established around the nutrition one could attain from a can of Pillsbury Biscuits. The inclusion of the carbohydrate-rich snack has also given birth to a new phobia in our culture: the fear of the popping sound. There’s even YouTube videos of people trying to overcome their fear of opening a can of biscuits. As serious as this phobia may be, it pales in comparison to the fear the MMA world has of seeing Dennis Hallman in a blue Speedo.

Fortunately, Ben Fowlkes of MMAFighting decided to skip past the infamous UFC 133 incident and focus on the fighter’s first voyage to Japan at UFC 29. Things weren’t as polished as they are now under the ZUFFA banner, especially the ‘official’ weigh-ins for the UFC.

“We all made weight down in the locker room on a regular scale. When we wanted to check our weight on the official scale we asked this [SEG employee] named Paula, and she said, ‘Okay, it’s up in my room.’ Which was, you know, kind of weird.”

“We go up there and it’s a freaking bathroom scale. Not only that, it’s all tweaked. We were all over [weight]. I was weighing about 175 [for a 170-pound bout]. Tito was weighing like 208 or something. It was a pretty big difference.”

“We went ahead and jumped on it a little bit so it would weigh normal,” said Hallman. “After we jumped on it, it kind of had a thing where if you leaned forward you’d weigh really light and if you leaned back you’d weigh really heavy.”

Be sure to read the rest of Ben Fowlkes’ story on UFC’s last visit to Japan mainly because he’s a friend of MiddleEasy — and I saw him urinate on a tractor on the side of some highway in Dallas, TX. That has to count for something. Also, that stuff about people having a real phobia of opening cans of biscuits — I made it all up. I hijacked your perception of reality. [Source]
