Longtime veteran Demian Maia has been competing in the UFC for more than a decade with his first bout coming in 2007. Maia has become well-known for his submission talents as the BJJ expert took on other athletes in the promotion. Another fighter from the same country as Maia, who also participates in the UFC is Alex Oliveira.

Both mixed martial artists donned a new look for their recent matchup. Although they both fight with the UFC, their bout against one another was not in MMA.

In his first grappling contest in about 15 years, Maia took on ‘Cowboy’ in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition this past Saturday. Known for his technical skills, Maia looked sharp as ever in the nogi match wearing shorts and short sleeves whereas Oliveira chose to go for the spats.

Well known for playing off his back, Maia managed to pull guard within the first minute. He was gunning to get a leg and got underneath Oliveira to sweep him from Ashi. Maia went in for an ankle lock which ‘Cowboy’ spun and kicked out in the first attempt. However, Maia ended up on top in full mount after a brief scurry.

Oliveira escaped from the position as the two men came back to their feet. It did not take long for Maia to pull guard again as he secured a full guard from Oliveira’s unsuccessful attempts to pass with pressure. Maia started looking for possible submission openings and he soon found one to lock in a triangle that earned him the win after a quick struggle at 2:11 into regulation.

The last time Maia competed in a grappling contest was in 2007 when he won gold in the 88kg division at the ADCC 2007 World Championships. Following the victory, he signed a contract with the UFC to make a full transition to MMA where he racked up a career total of 14 submissions.
