There are a thousand moments of over-hype in the sport of mixed martial arts. Without a doubt, 50% of anything a promotion says is complete crap. But the great exception to this rule is Demetrious Johnson. Every single heap of praise given to the UFC Flyweight champion couldn’t be more accurate.
No one in the UFC is more regularly dominant to top challengers. It’s to the point where he seems dismissive of his opponents. It almost seems like Johnson finishes fights on his schedule. A carefully plotted path of least resistance which minimizes damage. And against Ray Borg, this plan couldn’t have been followed better.
And this time, he finished Ray Borg with some real video game type shit.
Tell me that isn’t something straight out of Tekken 3 or a glitch in UFC EA Sports.
Mighty Mouse becomes exponentially more ruthless as fights go on. No longer content with taking decisions from broken fighters, Johnson’s new plan seems to maximize embarrassing his opponents before finishing them. To systematically take away any hope of their game plan, to break them mentally, and once they have resigned themselves to a decision loss, he hits something absurd like a suplex into arm bar, putting his opponent on the shelf for a few months as the bones and ligaments pop and break. It’s just everything you want from MMA.
Ray Borg, despite being thoroughly dominated, deserves some respect for holding on despite having no hope and enduring a terribly extended elbow joint. That took an unhealthy amount of guts.
Even after twelve title defenses, it’s a phenomenal gift that Demetrious Johnson can still surprise us with one of the most entertaining and original finishes of his career.
