The retirement of the inaugural ‘BMF’ champion Jorge Masvidal has brought back the belt for the ‘Baddest M’Fer’ in the UFC. The unique, silver title was first introduced back in 2019, where ‘Gamebred’ proved he was more game than Stockton slugger Nate Diaz.
Years later, another violent pair of fighters will compete for it as Dustin Poirier draws Justin Gaethje once again in the main event of UFC 291. While the BMF challengers have been chosen, it is still a mystery on who exactly will hand out the title inside the Octagon.
‘Tyson Should Hand Out The BMF Title’
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was the first, but who will follow him? Former two-division UFC Champion Daniel Cormier believes that responsibility should fall to legendary boxer Mike Tyson and credits Henry Cejudo for hatching the interesting idea.
“This fight’s gonna be nuts, man. I love the BMF title. I also wonder who’s gonna hand out the BMF title because last time the Rock was in there, he brought the BMF title to the ring. Henry Cejudo don’t have great ideas much, but he had one. Mike Tyson, bro. Tyson should hand out the BMF title,” Cormier said on DC & RC. “That would be great if Mike walked and hands the belt off.”
‘No Two Better Fighters Who Personify BMF’
DC believes Tyson fits the bill of ‘BMF’ just as Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier do.
“This dude [Gaethje] is crazy. We all know what type of beast Dustin Poirier is. These guys are fighting for the BMF title… As Dana said, there are no two better fighters who personify BMF than Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.”
BMF Champion To Get Title Shot?
While the winner of the UFC 291 headliner will get their hands on silver, potentially from Mike Tyson, Cormier says the win could also put the victor on a ‘fast track’ for a lightweight title fight with Islam Makhachev.
“This fight is for more than just the BMF title as [Ryan Clark] said. But it’s only gonna be for more if Charles Oliveira can beat Beneil Dariush because if Beneil Dariush wins, I think Beneil Dariush will get the next title fight. But if Charles Oliveira wins and whoever wins this one could potentially put themselves on the fast track to fight Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi. Dude, massive fight.”
History doesn’t always repeat itself but it’s worth noting that the first BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal did end up getting a title shot against Kamaru Usman right after his silver title capture at UFC 244.
