Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones will never bury the hatchet, and that’s okay.
‘DC’ and ‘Bones’ are two of the UFC’s fiercest rivals. Even with their last fight going down nearly eight years ago, seemingly little has changed in their relationship. During a recent Q&A session ahead of Saturday’s UFC Edmonton card, Cormier was asked about Jones’ potential retirement following this month’s long-awaited clash with Stipe Miocic and what it feels like to be “the son of Jones Jones.”
“DC, with Jon Jones fighting at MSG, it might be the last time we see him in the Octagon, in your opinion, what’s the greatest moment of his career, and on a lighter note, how does it feel to be the son of Jon Jones?” a fan asked.
While Cormier was mostly respectful to his longtime rival, that didn’t stop him from touching on the undisputed heavyweight champion’s antics outside the Octagon. ‘DC’ also addressed the latter part of the question with a rather hilarious retort.
“Eh, one of the greatest moments, he’s beaten a lot of guys, the amount of champions that Jon Jones has beaten over the course of his career is very impressive, the guy has been a champion for a long time, he’s done a great job and it will suck whenever he’s gone because the game is better when you have fighters like that in it,” Cormier said.
“Unfortunately there has been a lot of time when he hasn’t been in it because of the things he has done, and on a lighter note, f*ck you!”

Daniel Cormier Doesn’t Think He and Jones Will Ever Patch Things Up Like Tyson and Holyfield
As for his personal relationship with Jones after all these years, Cormier confirms that it’s not good, nor does he think it ever has to be.
“We aren’t great and I don’t think we ever have to,” Cormier said. “I think people need to stop, like, longing for the perfect happy ending. Guys don’t have to do what Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield did. Can be okay to just be okay with us being as we are. And I’m fine with it, so you guys should be too.”
Tyson infamously bit part of Evander Holyfield’s ear off during their WBA heavyweight championship rematch in June 1997. Years later, the two would make amends and work together under Tyson’s popular brand of premium cannabis products, Tyson 2.0. Hilariously, Tyson would release a line of gummies called Mike Bites while Holyfield put out his own product under the brand appropriately named Holy Ears.

Jones and Cormier met twice inside the Octagon, the first coming at UFC 182 in January 2015. On that night, ‘Bones’ came out on top via a unanimous decision to retain the light heavyweight title. Not long after, Jones was stripped of the strap after being slapped with felony charges related to a traffic accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Cormier went on to claim the vacant 205-pound crown with a third-round submission victory over the late Anthony Johnson. ‘DC’ defended it twice against Alexander Gustafsson and ‘Rumble’ before handing the belt back to Jon Jones at UFC 214. ‘Bones’ KO’d Cormier in the third round, but the result was later overturned to a no-contest after Jones tested positive for Turinabol.
The gold was handed back to Cormier and he would later go on to claim the heavyweight title, becoming the first fighter to win and defend both belts before his retirement in August 2020.
