Jon Jones, a 38-year-old from New York, holds a 27-1 MMA record with one no-contest. He debuted in the UFC in 2008, becoming the youngest champion in history at 23 by defeating Mauricio Rua for the light heavyweight title at UFC 128 in March 2011. Jones defended that belt eight times against top fighters like Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson. He vacated the title in 2020 to pursue heavyweight, winning it against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023. His final fight was a TKO over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November 2024. Jones announced his retirement on X on June 21, 2025.
Cormier’s Critique of Jones’ Retirement
Cormier reacted to Jones’ retirement, focusing on his refusal to fight interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
“I said ‘If Jon Jones does not fight Tom Aspinall, he quit,’” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “He quit. He did not want to fight Tom Aspinall. It’s so surprising. Is he scared? No. But by not fighting Aspinall, he opens the conversation.”
Cormier argued that Jones’ decision invites questions about his legacy.
Cormier suggested Jones’ avoidance of Aspinall could tarnish his reputation.
“To walk away right now opens the door for people to have the conversation about, ‘Does this affect the legacy?’” he said. He speculated Jones might return if Aspinall loses, adding, “I honestly feel like if Tom loses, (Jones) would come back – and that’s crazy to me, because that’s only going to make it worse.” Cormier emphasized, “I will go to my grave believing he quit instead of fighting (Aspinall).”
Cormier also addressed Jones’ recent legal issues, reported by KRQE News on June 20, 2025. Jones faces misdemeanor charges of assault and interference with communications from an April 2025 incident involving a drug-testing agent at his Albuquerque home.
“The saddest thing about this to me is that it’s not surprising,” Cormier said. “I’ve seen him do things over the course of his career that have been very dangerous and very – it’s just not smart.” Jones pleaded not guilty, with a court date set for July 2025.
Cormier expressed worry about Jones’ life after MMA.
“It made me question, what does this guy’s life look like when he does not have this,” he said. “I felt, when I was watching that, that Jon Jones is so tied to mixed martial arts. What does life look like when it’s gone?” He urged Jones to find purpose, adding, “I hope that as he goes into this next phase of his career, if it’s over forever, he fills the void with something positive. He’s got some beautiful children. He’s got a longtime girlfriend.”
Cormier emphasized the importance of family for Jones.
“Even if you have a lot of money, you can have money and still not have purpose. His purpose is in those beautiful kids of his. His purpose is in that beautiful woman of his,” he said. He expressed frustration, stating, “If I never heard another story like that about Jon Jones, that would not be soon enough. I don’t want to hear that.” Cormier concluded, “Jon Jones got to get this sh*t together, man.”
Jones’ 27-1 record and two-division championship mark him as one of MMA’s greatest. However, Cormier’s critique and Jones’ legal troubles raise questions about his post-fighting life. His retirement closes a chapter, but his influence on the sport remains undeniable.
