Daniel Cormier is a celebrated name in American wrestling and if there’s someone who is well aware of what present-day wrestlers are capable of, it would be most likely be him. His AKA teammate and UFC rising star, Islam Makhachev, on the other hand, is known for his sublime ground game in MMA and is open to testing his skills against multi-time world champion Jordan Burroughs. Islam is also close to former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team viewed him as an ideal candidate to be a successor to Khabib.

Islam wants it

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Cormier opened up about Makhachev’s confidence on his wrestling and how he really wants to grapple with Burroughs. According to “DC,” Makhachev is the best lightweight in MMA but he doesn’t see him winning against Burroughs in a wrestling match.

“Let me tell you something, Islam Makhachev is crazy, I told him I’m like ‘hey, my guy took you down to practice,’ he goes, ‘brother, bring Jordan Burroughs’ like this will be a good match [laughs],” Cormier revealed. “Like he’s so sure of his wrestling. I like, I love Islam, he’s the best fighter in the world in that weight class and his abilities are just second to none but you don’t know what these guys turned into.”

Burroughs wants Makcachev to prove it

During a previous talk with Cormier in February, Makhachev already explained how he thinks he could beat Burroughs. As per the Dagestani fighter, he would just defend the double leg and he can get the job done from there.

“I respect him but this guys have just double leg, I’m gonna defend his double leg and that’s it,” Makhachev told DC. “He go double leg, everybody defends, he pushes everybody. But in AKA we have wall, he cannot push me.”

Burroughs did not comment on Makhachev’s analysis. Instead, he just simply responded with “prove it.”

The fight could happen in time

Despite Cormier not being in favor of it, the Burroughs vs. Makhachev fight could still happen in the future. That is if Burroughs would keep his word as he previously said he wants “one MMA fight” before he calls it a career.

“I want one MMA fight before I retire. Just one,” Burroughs tweeted.

Burroughs is widely regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the world. Makhachev, meanwhile, has been making his own name in the UFC.
