Jon Jones, former UFC heavyweight champion, surprised fans by retiring from mixed martial arts on June 21, 2025, after backing out of a title defense against interim champion Tom Aspinall. UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout was fully arranged before Jones opted to end his career.
White shared his perspective on the situation.
“The fight was done. We had the fight done a long time ago,” he told The MacLife. “Why he decided not to fight, you guys will have to ask him that.”
Jon Jones exits MMA with a 28-1 record (1 no-contest), regarded as one of the sport’s greatest fighters. At age 23, he became the youngest UFC champion, capturing the light heavyweight title in 2011 against Mauricio Rua. He defended it 11 times, defeating legends like Daniel Cormier, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Alexander Gustafsson.
In 2023, Jones transitioned to heavyweight, securing the title against Ciryl Gane via first-round submission. He defended it against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November 2024. His 2013 bout with Gustafsson earned him a UFC Hall of Fame induction in 2021.
White noted the Aspinall fight was set.
“We had the fight done. You saw me talking about it very confidently that this fight was going to happen and then he changed his mind,” White explained. “He called us and just started saying, ‘You know what, I think I’m done. I want to retire and it’s been a great run. I appreciate everything.’ And that was it. He was absolutely, positively sure that he wanted to retire.”
White’s Insight and Jones’ Decision
White stressed Jones received a fair offer.
“He was offered what he deserves for that fight,” White said. “I think the reality is, whatever changed his mind to fight, I don’t know. You’d have to ask him that. He’s 38 years old. I don’t know the answer to these questions. Only he does.”
The UFC aimed for a fan-favored showdown, with Aspinall pushing for a unification match. White shared his view:
“We had the fight done. Listen, our job is to make the biggest fights we can make and the fights the fans want to see. That’s what we tried to do, but the minute somebody starts talking about retirement, you know my philosophy on that you should do it,” he continued.
He respected Jones’ stance, despite the agreement.
On June 21, 2025, news surfaced of a misdemeanor charge against Jones for allegedly leaving a car crash in New Mexico. Filed on June 17, the case awaits resolution, with a court date on July 24. Jones denied the claims, urging fans to doubt unverified reports.
History of Jones’ Success and Struggles
Jones’ career blended brilliance with controversy. A 2015 hit-and-run incident stripped him of his light heavyweight title. He faced DUI charges in 2012 and 2020, a domestic violence arrest in 2021, and a 2024 accusation of threatening a drug-testing agent. A 2017 knockout win over Cormier became a no-contest due to a failed drug test.
His skill remained unmatched, combining wrestling, striking, and submissions. White frequently labeled him the top pound-for-pound fighter, a sentiment shared by Khabib Nurmagomedov, who recently called Jones the best UFC fighter ever.
The UFC now centers on Aspinall as the heavyweight division’s new leader.
