UFC president Dana White has openly acknowledged that bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili has changed his opinion about him.
Dvalishvili recently made history by successfully defending his title three times in a single year, becoming the first fighter below 170 pounds to accomplish this feat. His latest victory came against Cory Sandhagen at UFC 320, a win that strengthened his standing as one of the top fighters in the division.
Quick Turnaround for UFC 323 Title Defense
Earlier this week, White revealed that Dvalishvili will immediately defend his title again in a rematch with Petr Yan in the main event of UFC 323. A victory there would mark the first time any fighter has defended a championship four times in one year, further cementing Dvalishvili’s place in MMA history.
Dana White Praises Dvalishvili’s Mentality
White admitted that he was initially skeptical of Dvalishvili’s style and approach. However, the champion’s persistence and drive have won him over.
“I love it,” White told reporters at a recent Contender Series press session when asked about Dvalishvili’s upcoming quick turnaround. “Listen, it took me a minute to warm up to Merab. I’m very warm now. I love that mentality. He wants to be the first guy to defend his title that many times in a year. If you look at what he’s gone out there and done, and how he’s proven himself as a fighter, and as a world champion, it’s impressive.”

White’s earlier criticisms of Dvalishvili were based on what he perceived as a lack of cutthroat aggression and questionable decision-making. Those concerns appear to have dissipated as Dvalishvili’s performances continued to impress. His three consecutive title defenses and upcoming rematch with Yan showcase a fighter fully in control of his career and driven to make history.
