- UFC president Dana White provided an update on Julianna Pena’s condition after UFC 277
- White commented on Amanda Nunes’ win and performance
The UFC 277 main event played out as advertised with both Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes engaging in a five-round war. However, it was “The Venezuelan Vixen” who was on the receiving end of all the battering as Nunes mauled her to reclaim the UFC women’s bantamweight belt via unanimous decision.
After the fight, UFC president Dana White provided an update on Pena’s condition and it sounded like there’s really something to worry about.
The now former champ was banged up
According to White, “a big chunk” of Pena’s forehead is “missing” and as he spoke, the now former 135-pound champ was already reaching out to a plastic surgeon.
“Julianna’s got a big chunk missing from her forehead,” White told Middle Easy and other reporters at the UFC 277 post-fight news conference. “She’s going to see a plastic surgeon right now. (She’ll) take some time to heal, and then I don’t know. She got pretty banged up tonight. It was like five or six knockdowns in the first two rounds. She was hurt. She needs to take some time off, relax, spend some time with her daughter and then we’ll go from there.”
No comparison
The UFC boss also weighed in on the fight and stressed that Nunes pulled off a dominant performance. For White, people should not be debating as it was crystal clear that “Lioness” and Pena are “not even comparable.”
“I thought it was completely dominant,” White said. “There was five knockdowns in the first two rounds. There’s a big difference between submission attempts and knockdowns. They’re not even comparable. Julianna’s tough as nails and her will to win is second-to-none. She wanted to win. I think as dominant as Amanda was – and she was dominant tonight – I didn’t think it was close in any way, shape or form. It was a complete shutout.”
Nunes said that she “could’ve finished” Pena but she wanted to let everybody know that she’s way better than her rival by beating her up for 25 minutes. No names were dropped at the moment but the champ-champ is expected to address her next move sooner rather than later. Let’s see how things will play out.
