UFC president thinks his welterweight champion needs to stay away from Canelo

It seems like MMA fighters wanting to box boxers will never go away and we are stuck in some never-ending loop. In the last few months, the UFC’s heavyweight champion and welterweight champion have shown a lot of interest in boxing. Unfortunately, UFC president Dana White is not into the idea, and he thinks fans aren’t into it either.

Stay away from Canelo

In a recent interview with The Underground, White explained once again why he isn’t into Kamaru Usman boxing Canelo Alvarez and Francis Ngannou boxing Tyson Fury.

“He is the greatest welterweight of all time. He’s the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. He’s a stud. Stay away from Canelo,” White said. “This whole boxing thing… Tyson Fury is one of the best heavyweights of all time. The best heavyweights in the world can’t stand with this guy and fight him. Canelo Alvarez, I think he’s pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world in boxing. You know, nobody can beat him in boxing. Stop guys! Stop, stop.”

No go on UFC fighters boxing

The UFC president understands that it is partly his fault for this mess because he put on Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather. But he says these fantasy fights and not the same because nobody wants to see them.

“What you have to understand is when that fight happened, everybody was going fu*king crazy over that fight. Everywhere I went people talked about it; the media, the fans, everybody wanted to see it. You know what I mean? Nobody’s knocking any doors down for any of these fights. I get it, these guys all want to get out there and try it and do it. But it’s not it’s not even remotely close to being the same,” White said.

Last month, Ngannou and Fury were in the ring together after Fury’s win causing everyone to speculate that the fight was getting close to happening. However, when asked if White was interested in possibly promoting the fight, he was unsure. White would instead see Ngannou fight Jon Jones or the Stipe Miocic trilogy- the best fighting the best.

“I don’t know man. I don’t know. You know what we do here, we put the absolute best against the best. What I want to do is Francis vs. Jon Jones or Francis vs. Stipe. Or Jon Jones vs. Stipe or John. The best against the best is what we do,” White said.

So, yeah. As of now, the UFC president still doesn’t care for Usman vs. Alverez or Ngannou vs. Fury. But hey, he’ll get asked about it again in two weeks. Yay.
