The final media appearance before UFC 322 ended with a long moment of silence between champion Jack Della Maddalena and challenger Islam Makhachev. Both fighters walked to the front of the stage after the press event at Madison Square Garden and immediately closed the distance, locking eyes with no hesitation.

There was no pushing, talking, or movement. They simply stayed inches apart with neither man looking away.

Dana White initially stepped aside to allow photographers to capture front facing shots, but the two fighters ignored the instruction. The stare continued, forcing White to hurry back and place himself between them before the moment escalated.

Makhachev had temporarily surrendered his lightweight belt to compete at welterweight, and although he is no longer a champion on paper, Della Maddalena kept his gaze fixed on him, even while holding his own title belt.

The loaded moment finally ended when White separated them and guided them off the stage.

Jack Della Maddalena’s First Defense Ahead Of A Perfect UFC Run

For Della Maddalena, Saturday marks his first time defending the welterweight crown. He captured the title in May with a win over Belal Muhammad and has not tasted defeat since joining the UFC, extending his career winning streak to eighteen fights.

This bout serves as his chance to retain his place at the top of the division while facing his highest profile opponent to date.

Makhachev arrives with a resume that has long put him among the sport’s most decorated active fighters. His run as lightweight champion included four title defenses before he decided to move to a heavier division.

A victory at UFC 322 would place him among the few who have held gold in two separate weight classes.

The fight is now only hours away, and the tension from their silent faceoff has only added to the anticipation inside Madison Square Garden.
