California State Athletic Commission is tying Napa Knockout to fighter retirement support. Executive director Andy Foster said the Saturday event at Raymond Vineyards in Napa is being built as a benefit for the state fighter pension system and the Association of Boxing Commissions Retired Fighters Charity.
The card is expected to include MMA, boxing, and kickboxing bouts, with proceeds aimed at retirement help for fighters after their active careers. The event also brings a different setting for a regional combat sports show, moving the card into a wine-country venue while keeping the fundraising mission at the center.
California already had a boxing pension fund dating back decades, and in 2024 the state launched a separate retirement fund for MMA fighters. Foster has continued looking for ways to add money to that fund, including specialty license plates and other public-private ideas. Napa Knockout is the latest step in that effort.
Ronda Rousey And Other Names Add Star Power
Foster credited commissioner Ronald Fiore with helping spark the idea through a connection to Raymond Winery. Foster called the setup “unique” and said California is trying to find new ways to help fighters after their careers end.
Ronda Rousey, Gina Carano, Randy Couture, Nate Diaz, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, Chris Leben, John McCarthy, Andre Ward, Vergil Ortiz Jr., Arnold Barboza, and Victor Ortiz are among the names expected to support the event. Rousey also promoted the California fighter pension cause publicly.
Foster said leaders in combat sports can help athletes who did not leave the sport with long-term financial security. That point is central to the event: the show is not only being presented as a fight card, but as another way to direct money toward retired fighters.
Napa Knockout also lands while crossover cards, charity events, and regulatory debates keep overlapping in combat sports. California has stayed active in that space, from assigning veteran officials for major MMA events to pushing retirement benefits. The same commission previously named Big John McCarthy, Mike Beltran, and Herb Dean for a major fight slate.
If Napa Knockout raises meaningful money for the pension effort, the event gives California another model for combining live fight cards with direct retirement support.
