Conor McGregor used his first public statement after UFC 329 to reject the idea that he entered the Max Holloway rematch already damaged.
McGregor’s return ended in the first round after he opened with a jumping kick, landed awkwardly, and could not stabilize his right leg. Holloway was awarded the TKO, and MiddleEasy’s main-event result post covered the official finish, the current fight image, and the UFC clips from the cage.
“My head gasket is gone. Destroyed.”
McGregor said he had no injury going into the fight and pointed to the way he trained and warmed up before walking to the cage.
“I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight.”
He closed the statement by describing the mental shock of the injury.
“This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”

McGregor followed with another post pushing back on talk that he looked off before the fight.
I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking in to the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face…

What McGregor’s Statement Changes
The denial came after the broadcast replay and post-fight discussion raised questions about whether McGregor’s knee was already bothering him before the opening bell. His statement says the opposite: no injury in camp, no injury backstage, and no warning before the landing that ended the fight.
Dana White later said the early belief was a blown ACL, while also stressing that the full answer would wait for an MRI. That leaves McGregor’s future paused between two things at once: his insistence that the injury was sudden, and the medical reality of another major lower-body setback.
The history is impossible to ignore. McGregor tore his ACL in his first Holloway fight in 2013, broke his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021, and returned at UFC 329 after five years away. He had spent fight week promising a major comeback, while MiddleEasy also covered his pre-fight comments about Holloway and Dana White’s pre-fight scenarios for him.
