Nearly a decade after their record setting boxing match, Conor McGregor has once again brought Floyd Mayweather into the conversation. This time, the setting is different. The rules are different. And the platform is the UFC White House event that continues to draw attention across combat sports.

McGregor, who is preparing for a return to the Octagon, used social media to revisit his long standing rivalry with the undefeated boxing legend. Rather than discussing boxing, the former two division UFC champion focused on mixed martial arts and the idea of Mayweather stepping into that world.

McGregor’s Message to Mayweather

McGregor reposted footage from their 2017 promotional tour and attached a caption that directly addressed Mayweather. The message mixed humor with confidence while clearly referencing MMA rules and the White House setting.

“Floyd Mayweather, when you are ready for that promised MMA bout, I am here. The White House is nice in the summer, I heard,” McGregor wrote.

“Just kidding, Mike [Chandler]! Although… I could fight both the same night. Floyd MMA? EASY. 10 seconds.”

No additional comments or interviews followed the post, and McGregor did not expand further on the idea.

McGregor and Mayweather faced each other in August 2017 in a boxing match that became one of the most commercially successful events in combat sports history. Mayweather won by tenth round stoppage, improving his professional boxing record to 50 and 0.

Since then, Mayweather has stayed retired from professional competition, participating only in exhibition bouts. McGregor, meanwhile, has remained under UFC contract and continues to signal interest in high profile returns.

The UFC White House event has been discussed as a potential landmark card, though no official bout announcements have been made.

At present, there is no confirmation that Mayweather has any interest in competing under MMA rules. He has not responded publicly to McGregor’s comments. UFC officials have also not indicated that crossover bouts are being considered for the White House event.

An MMA bout involving Mayweather would require regulatory approval, training considerations, and contractual agreements that make such a matchup unlikely. Still, McGregor mentioning Mayweather instantly draws global attention, something he has consistently leveraged throughout his career.

Whether the callout was serious or promotional, it succeeded in reigniting discussion around one of combat sports’ most famous rivalries.

For now, the idea remains hypothetical, but as history has shown, McGregor rarely speaks without intention.
