Colby Covington believes Conor McGregor wants nothing to do with the welterweight division.
McGregor recently made headlines when he revealed he was targeting a title shot upon his return.
However, rather than it being the lightweight title, McGregor wanted to face welterweight champion Kamaru Usman next.
Whether it happens remains to be seen. But with that said, McGregor tends to get what he wants and Usman would more than jump at the chance at fighting the Irishman.
But what does Covington make of McGregor’s callout? In a recent podcast appearance — which notably happened before his altercation with Jorge Masvidal — “Chaos” gave his thoughts.
“I’ve heard him say that stuff before and I think he’s trying to talk himself up and get himself hyped up,” Covington said on the Full Send podcast. “He’s not going to come here and fight real men in a real man’s weight class.
“He’s a great fighter, he’s done good business for himself and he holds a lot of Ls over Dustin Poirier still, but if you’re talking about 170, that’s not his weight class.”
Colby Covington vs. Conor McGregor?
As for whether Covington would fight McGregor? You probably know the answer already as just about everyone would fight McGregor for the lucrative payday that comes along with it.
But with that said, Covington doesn’t believe McGregor will ever want a piece of him.
“I mean I would, but he’s not going to fight someone where he knows there’s a 0% chance to win,” Covington added. “He can’t even hit lightning in a bottle. Realistically, I beat him 10 out of 10 times.”
Covington — as well as Usman — would more than likely be big betting favorites against McGregor.
However, that doesn’t mean it still wouldn’t be a fight many in the combat sports world would like to see.
