Colby Covington is in hype-smashing mode and he could eventually target Khamzat Chimaev.

Chimaev has been quickly rising up the UFC welterweight rankings. At the moment, he is the number 11-ranked UFC 170-pounder. He has been linked to a possible showdown with number two-ranked Gilbert Burns at UFC 273 on April 9.

Derailing The Hype Train

During an interview with BT Sport, Colby Covington said he has a knack for halting the momentum of his opposition (h/t MMAJunkie.com).

“Earn your way up and no problem – I’ll kick you right back down. I love destroying hype trains. I’m going to destroy one hype train this weekend in (Jorge) Masvidal. He’s never going to be the same ever again and no one is going to care about his fights.”

When it comes to Chimaev, Covington thinks some high-profile wins are in order before the two share the Octagon.

“With c**shot (Chimaev), earn your way up. Win some big, formidable fights and we can talk. But until then, stop trying to hype this kid up. These hype jobs they can get really hurt inside this Octagon.”

Chimaev has gotten off to a blazing start in his pro MMA career. He has a pro record of 10-0 and each of his four UFC fights has earned him a “Performance of the Night” bonus.

Covington will need to solely focus on his former training partner, roommate, and friend Jorge Masvidal. The two will have a grudge match in the main event of UFC 272 this Saturday night (March 5). The action will emanate from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
