Whenever new-school MMA fans debate the validity of PRIDE, I point them in the direction of Ricardo Arona vs Rampage Jackson and explain that fighters just don’t do those sorts of things anymore. Well, sometimes they do, but nobody did it with as much charisma and swagger as Rampage. In fact, when most people get caught in a triangle choke, they just pass out. It took a well-balanced mixture of brute strength and cojones to pull off the KO of the decade, but that was just anther day in the life of PRIDE FC.
Ten years ago, we weren’t sure if there was a single man on the planet who could beat Rampage Jackson in a fight. Then a couple of guys from Chute Boxe proved it was possible by utilizing generations old, textbook-accurate Muay Thai techniques. Now, we’re discussing a woman who could potentially submit the former UFC light heavyweight champion. Well, Chael Sonnen is discussing it, for whatever that’s worth. In a recent interview with TMZ, Chael decided to capitalize on an opportunity to congratulate Ronda by blasting Rampage (again).
“I’d like to congratulate Ronda Rousey on becoming a pioneer in this sport. It’s well deserved and overdue.”
“Looks like Mitt Romney has a new favorite fighter and Rampage Jackson has another opponent he can’t beat.”
In theory, it’d be an interesting fight if Rampage could refrain from treating Ronda like a reporter. On the flip side, those hip-thrusts could cost Rampage his arm, and possibly other protruding limbs. The truth is, now I can’t stop thinking about this fight and I blame Chael Sonnen. Even when he says something far-fetched and unrealistic, it still leaves me wondering if he’s serious. You’re probably wondering the same thing. Maybe Chael Sonnen is the little monster in the back of all our minds, and we have Jon Jones to thank for that. [Source]
