Chael Sonnen didn’t know that you could fracture a penis.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to former UFC fighter Mateus Mendonca. During a recent interview, the Brazilian revealed that he suffered the horrific injury during a fairly routine jiu-jitsu training session. Mendonca, who was not wearing a cup during the incident, has since stressed the importance of wearing protective gear, even if it means restricting movement.

Essentially, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Commenting on the unique situation on his YouTube channel, ‘The American Gangster’ offered his condolences to Mendonca and shared his surprise over the fact that one can actually feature their penis.

“I also didn’t know that you could fracture a penis,” Sonnen said. “There’s no bone in there, to my knowledge. And there are certain things you’d rush to the doctor to fix, but there are also certain things you wouldn’t want to go to the doctor for because you wouldn’t really know how to explain it—or you’d try to heal it at home. That sounds like what happened here.

“Can’t do anything for two months. He’s at home, not training, just at home with his broken penis. It was fractured in jiu-jitsu with a technique I’ve never been shown. That’s terrible. I want him to feel better, and I want his message to get out so nobody else fractures their penis. His message was simple: If you’re doing jiu-jitsu, wear a cup so you don’t fracture your penis.”

After scoring an impressive 48-second knockout on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022, Mendonca lost three straight inside the Octagon resulting in his release from the promotion.

Since then, Mendonca has climbed back into the win column with a 20-second submission over Luan Matheus under the Centurion FC banner in October. Overall he is 11-3 in mixed martial arts with seven of his wins coming inside the distance.
