Chael Sonnen is skeptical about Jon Jones’ weight gain in his heavyweight debut.

It has been three years since former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones stepped foot into the Octagon. Back in August 2020, Jones decided to relinquish his title and set his sights on a move to the heavyweight division. Over the last three years, he has been working to bulk up and pack on more weight in order to be ready for the heaviest of all divisions in the UFC. Recently Jones came out and said he was trying to “pack on 40 pounds “ in order to prepare for his next bout against Ciryl Gane.

Jones has been dominant for a very long time. He was undefeated as champion in the light heavyweight division and now is looking to continue that dominance at heavyweight. Jones decided to take his time and make the move worthwhile by trying to grow in size. Many believe that was a good idea although there is one man who is not sure Jones will be quite as big as he is promising. That man is Chael Sonnen.

Chael Sonnen is tired of hearing about Jon Jones’ physique

Jones’ debut at heavyweight is probably one of the most anticipated fights of the year. Recently Jones was speaking to an audience via Twitter Spaces with Kanpai Pandas in which he explained the difficulties he went through to put on his mass.

“One of the hardest things was not being able to lose my shape while still trying to pack on 40 pounds,” Jones said h/t MMA Fighting. “I think when the fans see me, they’ll be surprised that I still look a lot like I used to — [although] my shoulders are a lot more broader, I freaking gained a whole bunch of ass, unfortunately — but just trying to keep that shape and doing it the right way.”

Chael Sonnen has now responded to Jones on his YouTube channel saying even though Jones has been vocal about weighing 240 pounds and being much larger than he was fighting at 205, he is not quite convinced.

“I mean, not for nothing but he had to get to 240, this was the big thing and now he’s saying I don’t really know if I’m 240. I’m not going to tell anybody what I weigh, I want it to be a surprise for Ciryl,” he said. “Now we can play a game with that, I actually thought that was pretty fun by Jon, I thought that was one of the better things for marketing and promotion that he’s done leading into this fight in all fairness, but either way, it’s gonna be 240 or it’s gonna be under 240. I would think that it’s under that’s why we’re playing the game because we’re not going to be 240. I think that 240 is hard to meet because when he was there on Instagram a year and a half ago, he just wasn’t training full speed, right?”

Sonnen feels that Jones is misleading a bit, possibly for a good reason about the amount he will be weighing on fight night. Ciryl Gane has been in the Octagon with some of the best in the heavyweight division he is a tough challenge for Jones at any weight.
