- Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier are convinced Jon Jones would’ve stopped Francis Ngannou as well if their fight ever happened
- “The Bad Guy” believes “Bones” has yet to show the best of his abilities
Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier both think Jon Jones would’ve finished Francis Ngannou after witnessing the light heavyweight champ defend his title at UFC 309.
Ngannou would’ve ended up like Stipe too
Speaking on “Good Guy/Bad Guy” with DC, Sonnen pointed out that what “Bones” did to Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 gave fans a preview of how a showdown with “The Predator” would’ve unfolded. For “The Bad Guy,” Jones would’ve done the same with Ngannou and dominate his way to a brutal finish.
“Do you know what Jon would have done to Francis Ngannou in hindsight. Now that we look back, Jon would have picked that big man a part. I mean, I’m just sharing with you, like, that’s a big man’s nightmare. Jon’s not a heavyweight, Jon is fighting at heavyweight. There’s a massive difference,” Sonnen said.
On the other hand, DC, who fought Jones twice, agreed with Sonnen. According to Cormier, “Bones” obliterated Miocic and he doesn’t see anything Ngannou would’ve done differently had his showdown with Jones materialized.
“Francis would have struggled with Jones,” Cormier speculated. “Dude, he threw Stipe down and just beat the crap out of him. He literally grabbed him by the neck, stepped behind his leg and threw him down. He choke slammed him and just beat him on the ground.”
Chael thinks Jon could still do more
Sonnen further talked about Jones’ phenomenal skill set. In Chael’s eyes, “Bones” has yet to really showcase all of his attributes as he always adjusted to his opponents and did what he had to do to win depending on the situation.
“I’m just not convinced that we’ve seen the best Jon. When he outboxed Stipe, I think it’s cuz he needed to outbox Stipe and when he out wrestles the great wrestlers, it’s cuz he needed to. I’m not positive that he’s showing us any more than he’s got to show us and I really don’t know just how good he could be or how good he really is if he’s tested with something and when I do look at Tom [Aspinall], if Tom is bringing self-defense, he’s not going to beat Jon. It’s got to be self-offense,” Sonnen said.
“He’s got to be the one that goes first, he’s got to impose his size. If he starts backing up like Stipe did and circling to the smaller man, it is over,” he continued.
As it stands, Jones has made it clear that he wants an insane amount of money to agree to fight Tom Aspinall. For “Bones,” a clash with Alex Pereira is the only fight that interests him. However, UFC president Dana White is not keen on the idea of making the Jones vs. Pereira fight happen.
