Chael Sonnen did not frame Conor McGregor‘s UFC 329 injury loss as only a bad physical break. In the real post-fight recap, Sonnen and Dean Thomas moved straight from the knee injury to the bigger problem: McGregor’s UFC leverage now looks much weaker with one fight left on his deal.
The UFC on Paramount+ recap opened with the same facts that shaped the night. McGregor tried a jumping roundhouse kick on Max Holloway, his right knee buckled, and UFC President Dana White later said doctors were assuming a blown ACL pending more information.
Sonnen said the fight looked strange from the opening seconds, especially because McGregor went back to the kick after missing badly.
“In many ways, coach, I don’t really know what I was looking at there. The fight starts, Conor comes running across the ring. He’s jumping in there like me and my buddies after we watched a Bruce Lee movie and we’re headed out to the car.”
“He missed him by a country mile. Then thought it was a good idea to go back to it again.”
Sonnen also noticed Holloway’s reaction once McGregor was hurt. Instead of immediately pouring on damage, Holloway appeared to recognize something was wrong.
“I’m wondering if Conor said something. I’m just wondering if maybe Max was close enough that he could hear it, even be a groan. But you know when you hear that from your opponent, you read his face real fast.”
Sonnen Says The UFC Contract Picture Changed
The hardest part of the segment came when Thomas asked where McGregor goes after another long injury setback. Sonnen said McGregor had personally told him earlier in the week that he still had two fights left before UFC 329. After the Holloway bout, Sonnen said that leaves one.
“Whatever was going on between Conor and the UFC, however that negotiation looked, a lot of the power is now gone from that.”
“Conor, what he shared with us, I spoke to him personally earlier this week. He said, ‘I got two fights left.’ So, if he’s done this one, he’s on his last one. If there’s not an extension, and I don’t think there’ll be.”
Sonnen tied that directly to the UFC’s past handling of the long-discussed Michael Chandler matchup. His point was not that UFC had announced a final contract decision. It was that the promotion has fewer obvious reasons to rush McGregor back now.
“If the UFC wasn’t rushing to get Conor back into the cage against Michael Chandler, which they had promised, if they weren’t rushing, I don’t think they’re going to rush to any opportunities now for McGregor.”
“He is in between weight classes at 170. He does not have a ranking there. It’s going to be very hard to return somebody with that price tag to a main event.”
Chandler Is The Only Rebound Fight Sonnen Sees
Sonnen still named Chandler as the only fight that makes sense if UFC gives McGregor one more bout. He also made clear that the booking would not look like the kind of stadium-sized main event McGregor once commanded.
“I don’t think he can really rebound from this. But if there is a rebound process for him, there’s only one fight for me.”
“Michael Chandler, because Michael Chandler was promised his fight years ago, and if you’re going to give him a fight, if he’s got one fight left on his contract, Michael Chandler is the guy.”
“The UFC would do that. I mean, I’ll speak for them now. They’ll do that, but they can’t do it at this price tag because you can’t main event that. You can’t do it on a big card like this.”
“If Conor wants to be one of the guys and he wants another experience and a love of the game, they could put him third fight from the top. They could have him open up the main card, but to have a main event without a title attached, without a ranking attached, oh, by the way, for that price tag, is simply not good business.”
The Injury Sequence Is Still The Starting Point
The contract talk only exists because UFC 329 ended almost immediately. Holloway officially won by first-round injury TKO after McGregor’s knee gave way.

Sonnen said the fight was about more than the knee, but he also avoided turning the injury into a diagnosis. He said he hoped McGregor gets better and pointed to the personal reasons McGregor had given for returning to MMA.
“Listen, I hope Conor gets better, but this fight was about a little bit more than just the physical performance. Conor shared with us that he had some demons. He shared with us that he was getting a little off course in his life and he wanted to get back.”
“He shared with us that MMA is the one thing that he really knew could straighten him out.”
