Robert Whittaker, once a dominant force in the middleweight division, may soon step into new territory. The former champion is considering moving up to light heavyweight, a decision supported by UFC veteran Chael Sonnen.
Whittaker held the middleweight title for two years, showcasing his skills at the top of the division. However, since losing the belt, his journey back to the title has been challenging. His recent fight at UFC 308 saw him face Khamzat Chimaev, a rising star known for his wrestling. The fight ended with Chimaev overpowering Whittaker early, leaving fans questioning what might come next for the Australian fighter.
Chael Sonnen Endorses Whittaker’s Move to Light Heavyweight
Sonnen believes that a shift to the light heavyweight division could be the solution. He explained that Whittaker still has impressive speed, which could give him an edge against larger opponents in the division. This move might also provide a quicker path to a championship opportunity, as the middleweight division remains crowded with contenders.
“I am so completely for that idea, and I don’t totally know what would happen. I just know I’ve never seen Robert Whittaker quit ever. And I also know another thing….. The old expression ‘father time catches everyone,’ that’s not what’s happening with Whittaker. “A great way to mask it is to go up in weight, because those guys are slower,” Sonnen said.
At 34, Whittaker still has time to make an impact in the UFC, but age brings its own challenges. Sonnen pointed out that fighters often lose some quickness over time, but Whittaker’s speed could still make him a strong contender at light heavyweight.
“There has always been the misconception that size is better. It doesn’t matter how many times it gets shown to the audience that size is a detractor. It got shown to the world Saturday in Fury vs. Usyk. The whole world saw it. There is no such thing as a reach advantage, a height advantage, or a size advantage.
“I love the idea of him going to 205 pounds,” Sonnen continued.
The idea of a fresh start is particularly appealing considering the competitive nature of his current division. The middleweight rankings are packed with skilled fighters, and the road to the top is not an easy one. A move to light heavyweight would offer Whittaker the chance to face new opponents and potentially earn another title shot.
While Whittaker has not confirmed this change, the support from Sonnen highlights the potential benefits of exploring a new division. Fans are eager to see what lies ahead for the former champion, who has always been a respected figure in the sport.
For Whittaker, the decision to move up could mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his UFC career.
