Chael Sonnen, a former UFC title challenger and current MMA analyst, issued a public apology on May 21, 2025, for an altercation at the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas in December 2021. In an Instagram video, Sonnen addressed Christopher and Julie Stellpflug, the couple involved, expressing remorse for his actions during the incident, which led to legal consequences and media scrutiny.

Sonnen described the encounter, acknowledging his behavior.

“Dr. Chris and his wife Julie Stellpflug, Mr. and Mrs. Stellpflug, a number of years ago in Las Vegas were coming down a hallway trying to get to their room, encountered a maniac, me, and I apologize,” he said. “I’ve wanted to apologize for a number of years, but it just wasn’t right. It’s a whole situation. It just takes time, but I’ve got to tell you it has been bothering me.”

He extended his apology beyond the couple.

“I would extend this apology to their children. Children were not present, but I have children. Reverse the role and think of myself as a child with my own parents. Your parents get drug through the media and a legal case because they encounter a madman while doing what they should be doing in a hallway, which is walking to their room. I’ve got to tell you, you’re owed an apology and I sincerely give you one,” Sonnen added.

Sonnen clarified his wife’s absence during the incident.

“I was by myself when I met them,” he continued. “I was on my trip with my wife and because of that there was something I’d heard or a combination you guys had asked—my wife had nothing to do with the story. They’ve all never seen, never even put eyes on one another. This is very specifically from the madman in the hallway, me, to Mr. and Mrs. Stellpflug. I sincerely apologize. I would like to repeat, I also apologize to yo.”

Social media posts noted Sonnen’s sincerity, with some praising his accountability and others questioning the delay.

From Octagon Contender to Controversial Figure

Chael Sonnen began his MMA career in 1997, competing in regional promotions before joining the UFC in 2005. With a 31-17-1 record, he challenged for the middleweight title against Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in 2010 and UFC 148 in 2012, and the light heavyweight title against Jon Jones at UFC 159 in 2013, losing each time. Known for his wrestling and trash-talking, Sonnen became a fan favorite, earning a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame’s Fight Wing for his 2010 bout with Silva.

After retiring from UFC in 2014, Sonnen competed in Bellator MMA, facing Tito Ortiz and Fedor Emelianenko, retiring again in 2019. Off the cage, he built a career as an ESPN analyst and YouTube host, though controversies followed. In 2011, he pleaded guilty to money laundering related to mortgage fraud, receiving probation. In 2014, he tested positive for banned substances, leading to a two-year suspension.

The 2021 hotel incident saw Sonnen accused of attacking the Stellpflugs and others, including hotel staff, allegedly unprovoked. The couple claimed Sonnen slapped a drink from Christopher’s hand and punched them, causing injuries. Sonnen faced 10 misdemeanor battery charges and one felony battery by strangulation charge, later reduced. In July 2023, he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor breach of peace charge, paying a $750 fine, with other charges dismissed. A hotel employee also filed a civil lawsuit in 2022, which remains unresolved.

Sonnen’s apology comes nearly four years after the event, following the legal resolution. He noted the timing felt appropriate now, though he avoided detailing the altercation, only hinting at a “trip” affecting his judgment. The Stellpflugs have not publicly responded, and no further legal actions have been reported since 2023.

Sonnen continues his work as a commentator for Bellator and BKFC, maintaining a strong presence in MMA media.
