Carla Esparza Looking For Rematch With Another Former Champ

Carla Esparza is fresh off a victory over Virna Jandiroba last weekend, at UFC on ESPN+ 8. Now she is looking for a fight with former long-time strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Esparza was the first ever UFC Strawweight Champion. This was a title that she won by beating Rose Namajunes, following a season of TUF. Following that victory, the champ would make a quick turnaround, to face Joanna. Joanna would go on to dominate her, and the rest of the division. That is, until she met the aforementioned Namajunes who beat her in back to back bouts.

Now Esparza is looking for their paths to cross again. “Cookie Monster” calls for a fight with Joanna in an interview with MMAJunkie. It was here that she expressed that she not only has improved her game, but that the first fight took place when she was in a bad spot.

“Honestly, I’ve thought about that a lot since the fight happened. Not to take anything away from her win, but I really wasn’t in the best place. I think she’s gotten better, I’ve gotten better, and I would definitely be welcomed to that fight again. No matter what happens in that fight, it would be a much different fight than it was the first time.”

Following this most recent victory, the former Invicta and UFC champion snapped a two fight losing streak. With that, Carla Esparza has gone 4-3 since losing the title in 2015. Joanna is 1-3 in her last 4 outings, with her three losses coming in title fights. Her most recent was a bid to win the vacant UFC Flyweight Title against Valentina Schevchenko.

The two are in similar predicaments, and a rematch between the two former champs might be an excellent fight.
