Cain Velasquez has been in his jail cell for two months already; however, defense attorney Mark Geragos is hopeful his client will have bail granted.

Hopeful

Geragos spoke to MMA Junkie this week about his client’s situation and said he is of no threat.

“The bail hearing is scheduled for Monday, and we’re hopeful that he’ll be released on terms and conditions that can satisfy the court that there is no threat, which there clearly is not,” Geragos said. “Based on what I’ve seen of Cain and what I know of Cain, there is no threat.”

The former UFC heavyweight will have a bail hearing on Monday, May 16, 2022. He was denied bail on March 7 by Judge Sheylna Brown because said found Velasquez to be reckless and too much of a risk.

“This case involves allegations of extreme recklessness to human life. Ramming a vehicle in the middle of the day where our citizens are out driving, going about their business, and shooting out of a car at other individuals, which is reckless by any standard. Anyone could’ve been injured. Anyone could’ve been killed…This court is making a ruling that the risk is too great. There will be no bail set at this time.” this court is making a ruling that the risk is too great. There will be no bail set at this time,” Judge Brown said.

Velasquez was arrested after shooting at accused child molester Harry Goularte but hitting Goularte’s stepfather in the shoulder. Goularte allegedly molested Velasquez’s four-year-old relative, which caused the retired heavyweight fighter to retaliate.

Velasquez faces attempted murder, and if found guilty, he faces a minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison.
