In the people’s main event at UFC 314, controversial featherweight standout Bryce Mitchell returned to the Octagon for a heated grudge match with Brazilian knockout artist Jean Silva.
Silva last competed just over two months ago, scoring his fourth straight KO under the UFC banner. Immediately following the win, ‘Lord’ called for a clash with Mitchell after ‘Thug Nasty’ made some especially unsavory comments on his Arkansanity podcast.
Since then, the two have been going back and forth, but on Saturday night, the time for talk was over as the two surging 145’ers looked to land the biggest win of their respective careers.
Round 1
Mitchell puts pressure on early, and Silva waves him on against the fence. Silva throws a high kick that gets blocked. Mitchell targets the body with a couple of kicks. Silva gets flashy with a spinning heel kick that misses the mark. Mitchell continues with kicks to the midsection, looking to keep distance between himself and Silva’s dangerous right hand. Mitchell lands a leg kick and Silva fires back with a kick to the body. Silva is looking to close the distance and nearly catches Mitchell with a counter right.
Silva misses with another right, but lands another. Mitchell rolls with it, minimizing the damage. Silva is already showing some swelling on his lead leg from the assortment of calf kicks. Mitchell throws a spinning back fist. With two minutes left in the round, Mitchell shoots for a takedown, but Silva stuffs it with ease. Mitchell lands with a pair of straight lefts. Silva starts to find his range with the jab. Silva lands a nasty kick to the body. Mitchell shoots for a takedown and finds himself trapped in a guillotine choke with less than a minute to go.
Mitchell pops his head out, and Silva immediately stands up against the fence and separates with only seconds left in the round.
Round 2
25 seconds into the second round, Mitchell connected with a big right hand that put ‘Thug Nasty’ on the mat. Silva forced Mitchell to get back up. Mitchell shoots in for a takedown against the fence, but he can’t get the Brazilian down. Mitchell breaks away, and Silva connects with a left. Mitchell immediately shoots again, but Silva defends. Mitchell has no interest in standing with Silva after getting a taste of the power ‘Lord’ possesses.
Silva lands a step-in elbow against the fence, and Mitchell once again tries to take him down. Silva fends it off, and the two briefly clinch up against the fence. Mitchell is showing some fatigue, but is staying offensive. Silva throws a left hand followed by a body kick. Mitchell lands another right hand that prompts Mitchell to shoot for a desperation takedown.
Silva locks in a ninja choke as Mitchell shoots in and forces ‘Thug Nasty’ to tap out in the second round.
