UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano who never made it to the scale on Friday as Montano was transported to the hospital ahead of UFC 228 weigh-ins. ESPN first reported the news that now co-main event title fight with Valentina Shevchenko off the table.

“Nicco Montaño will not fight at UFC 228 tomorrow, after being hospitalized this morning,” Okamoto reported on Twitter. “Valentina Shevchenko just made weight in Dallas, but I’m told the co-main event is off.”

Montano who won the inaugural title as an underdog last December when she defeated Roxanne Modafferi via unanimous decision at ‘The Ultimate Fighter 26’ Finale. The 29-year-old champion remained inactive for all of 2018 with multitude health problems.

A former bantamweight title contender Shevchenko (15-3) made her flyweight debut back in February by battering Priscila Cachoeira. Valentina was also in a similar situation ahead of UFC 213 showdown back in July 2017, when 135-pound champion Amanda Nunes was hospitalized just a day before the fight and withdrew from the card citing illness.

At the moment, it is unknown why Nicco Montano transported to the hospital. The speculation, of course, is that it was related to her weight cut.

Update:

According to her training partner, Montano will be fine in few days as she hospitalized due to kidney function, bad news we have no women’s flyweight title fight at UFC 228.

“She will be fine in a few days,” training partner Steve Hanna told MMA Fighting. “The UFC medical team was called in to evaluate her this morning during the process of her weight cut. They determined that she had to cease cutting weight and be transported to and treated at the local hospital for issues regarding her kidney function.”

No word as of yet what plans promotion has for flyweight title, or if they’ll rebook the Montano-Shevchenko bout for an upcoming card.
