Lots of questions emerged when he crowned the middleweight title at UFC 217 against Michael Bisping, that how long he would stay there.
GSP shocked everyone when he returned to UFC after four years of layoff, in a division above where he reigned supreme for so many years, and it pays off all the hard work. He went through a hell of weight cut program, which ultimately results in ulcerative colitis. He repeatedly said, his contract dictates that he defend the title against Robert Whittaker.
However, that brutal victory was last stop at middleweight division, as GSP is leaving the division.
St-Pierre was recently speaking to TSN.
“We’ll have to talk about it, but I’m not sure if I compete, if I will go back at 185-pounds. I don’t think so. Of course in terms of weight, If I want to go back to compete at 185-pounds I will. Obviously eating — I did what I did, I learned from my mistakes — I don’t think it’s a good thing to do. Force myself to eat to gain muscle mass. I’ve always been against performance enhancing drugs and I [moved up to another weight division] the natural way. There is no easy way. I did it the hard way and it was to gain weight and maintain my muscle mass. It was very hard, and it was not healthy. I think the body has a natural weight where you can perform and its best athletic ability and for me, the weight I am now is my perfect weight.”
UFC president Dana White stated at media scrums that he would certainly not be happy, as GSP just broke the news that he is not staying at middleweight class. St-Pierre has spent almost the sum of his 28-fight career competing at 170 pounds before leaving the MMA back in 2013.
No news on St-Pierre’s next move, even he doesn’t seem sure, but it’s hard to think that the super fight against Woodley that the welterweight champ has wanted all along isn’t a possibility.
What do you guys think GSP will move back to the welterweight division for his future fights or may not fight at all?
