Blast to The Past: What better time than now to rewatch Cyborg/Carano?

The buzz surrounding an up-and-coming Cris Cyborg and American sweetheart in the making Gina Carano felt no equal in August of 2009. Never before had two monolith structures in the relatively new sport of female MMA been on a collision course to championship gold quite like this. Between the open workouts drawing massive crowds in New York’s Times Square, and a general feeling of grand spectacle surrounding the stacked (at first) event, everyone wanted to see what was going to happen when Carano and Cyborg fought for the inaugural Strikeforce women’s featherweight title.

The fight is a testament to another time. The old Strikeforce logo, EA MMA, Rockstar sponsoring Strikeforce… Ronda Rousey wouldn’t even make her amateur MMA debut for another year when this fight went down. With Gina Carano off making movies and strutting the red carpet and Cris Cyborg currently suspended due to PED use, what better time than now to go back and look at what is still the trendsetting pinnacle of women’s MMA – with another peak rapidly approaching on the horizon. If this fight was the female version of Chuck/Tito, then Ronda/Cyborg has officially entered Fedor/Brock status. Hopefully we get to see it happen.
