Blast to the Past: The UFC's Rustam Khabilov won another fight by devastating suplex, and you didn’t even know!

Oftentimes, we’re left wondering why more people don’t practice obvious, yet effective techniques inside the Octagon. Following Rashad Evans’ knee-to-solar-plexus victory over Tito Ortiz, other fighters have followed his lead, but it took a bold, adventurous leap of faith from the Ultimate Fighter winner to inspire others to finish their fights with that exact technique. Similarly, the suplex is one of them most devastating combat staples in various disciplines, but it took Rustam Khabilov to introduce the move to the UFC audience. Sure, Kevin Randleman did it to Fedor in Pride, but Fedor came back and won that fight anyway. The way Rustam did it to Vinc Pichel at the TUF finale last weekend = no can defend.

Today’s ‘Blast to the Past’ takes us back to August 16, 2009 where Rustam Khabilov defeated Akin Duran by belly-to-belly suplex, years before his UFC debut. Check out this video of Rustam and all his Sambo swag.
