Former UFC fighter BJ Penn was scheduled for a court-ordered mental health evaluation on December 29 in Hilo, Hawaii, but did not appear. The assessment was intended to determine “The Prodigy’s” competency before his legal case proceeds.

Because of his absence, the court is expected to rule soon on whether to grant an extension for the evaluation or take other actions.

Penn, 47, has faced multiple legal incidents over the past year, including six arrests in six months. His recent conduct also includes repeated violations of a restraining order involving his mother. In addition, Penn has claimed to be targeted by what he describes as identity thieves, fueling further concern about his mental state.

In a public post on Instagram, Penn defended himself, writing:

“The state is ganging up and trying to do everything they can to shut me down to shut me up and to steal my money. Everyone out there has to know that this can happen to all of us at any time. It’s time for us to start pulling together and start teaming up, we cannot let the coalition or the state do this to us. We need to come together and unite.”

BJ Penn has not competed in the Octagon since losing to Clay Guida at UFC 237 in early 2019. He holds a professional record of 16 wins, 14 losses, and 2 draws and is widely remembered for his two-division championship reigns in the UFC.

The court’s review of his mental health is now a key factor in the continuation of his legal case. Penn’s no-show has complicated proceedings and left officials determining how best to proceed.
