Is Ben Askren In Kamaru Usman’s Head?
Ever since the UFC signed the former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren in a historic MMA deal, the outspoken wrestler has been picking up an online feud with every fighter in the vicinity of the 170-pound class. But from the past few weeks ‘Funky’s’ wrath has been directed to Kamaru Usman who’s slated to challenge his friend Tyron Woodley for Welterweight title at UFC 235.
Last week both fighters were in attendance at the UFC 235 pre-fight press conference to promote their upcoming fights against Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler. Of course, both fighters have a lot to say to each other, but before they step on presser stage, Askren and Usman got into a physical altercation backstage luckily UFC head honcho Dana White and security intervened.
Instead of focusing on their world-class opponents, both are taking firing shots on each other.
Askren joined “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show recently where he reacted to the video of the incident which was released. ‘Funky’ also said this whole situation was laughable.
“Can you believe Marty put this video out?” Askren said (H/T to MMAFighting). “This video makes him look like a dumb-dumb and it was his camera person that put it out! He is bragging about this and this is what I can’t stand about fighters. Listen, we get that you’re tough. You fight in a cage. I understand that perfectly, but he has to come up to me, [when] you know nothing is going to happen back there, Marty! Why are you getting in my face? You know you’re not gonna risk your main event shot by punching me in the back hallway.
“Give me a freaking break. I couldn’t fathom why he was trying to act so tough and what he was trying to do or get out of the situation. If it was intimidation, that’s freakin’ laughable. Look at his skinny jeans! You can’t be acting tough when you’re in white skinny jeans and a scarf.”
Their feud began when Askren called out Usman for an interim welterweight title at UFC 233 to save the main card.
There is a chance both fighters can meet inside the Octagon if they win their respective fights at UFC 235. No doubt UFC wouldn’t even waste a min to book this bout. Askren also says whether they get a chance to meet or not but I already won the mental war.
“I am under your skin so bad that I say one thing – I said, ‘Am I sitting next to Marty?’ and he got all pissed,” Askren said. “And the funny thing is, he’s not even like, ‘Marty’s not my name, don’t call me Marty.’ . . He’s not even denying that Marty is his name so I don’t even know what he’s mad about! What is he mad about? I’m so far under his skin and so far in his head it’s not even funny.”
After finishing his interview with Helwani, Askren took to Twitter and trolled Usman by posting a photo of ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ with a curly-haired wig.
