“UFC is currently discussing booking Ben Askren vs. Demian Maia once Askren’s medical suspension is up in september, according to sources.”
The medical suspension that Helwani refers to, is the one Askren received from UFC 239. In record-setting moment, he was the receiving end of a flying knee to the face. Additionally, Jorge Masvidal took 5 seconds to flatten Askren, and set a new record for quickest UFC knockout. It was a truly incredible moment.
This would be Askren’s first fight after this, and it seems he took a bit of a safer route this time. According to the report, he will be facing BJJ standout, Demian Maia, in his return. Maia is on a 2-fight win streak, which is amazing considering he is 42 years old. He has been competing in the UFC since 2007, and is a two-time title challenger.
To be fair, this contest does have potential to be slow-paced. Maia is known for his ability to neutralize opponents’ gameplans. While Askren is known to utilize his Olympic wrestling to control his opponents.
Despite this, it will be a good return fight for Ben Askren. Check MiddleEasy for updates, as the bout becomes official.
