Belal Muhammad was already thinking about retiring if he happens to fail in dethroning Leon Edwards at UFC 304.

Belal was ready to quit

Speaking to The Fighter and The Kid podcast, “Remember The Name” opened up about knowing how difficult his journey to title contention was. That said, Muhammad confessed that he knew he wasn’t gonna get another title shot if he lost to “Rocky” and so, he thought about retiring if he ends up losing.

“It was to the point in my head where I was looking at it: ‘If I lost, there’s a chance I’d probably hang them up, because I’m not gonna get another shot at it,’” Muhammad said. “It was so hard to get there…I’m begging [fans] to make a video for me, hype me up to get a shot there. I hate asking people for anything, but bro, I needed it, and I’m so desperate to do whatever it takes to get this shot that I’d try anything.”

Belal was always about the gold

Despite being overlooked as a contender, Muhammad proved that his mindset was one of his strengths. For the reigning welterweight champ, it’s his unbreakable mental toughness that also helped him achieved his goal in the UFC.

“I never got in here just to be here right, the goal is to win the title, my thing is always gold is the goal, gold is the goal… I’ve had people that I known that, ‘Oh, I was just happy to make [it to the UFC], their goal was to make it to the UFC then you see them lose a couple then they’re gone, because that was their goal, to make it to the UFC. My goal is to always prove that I’m the best in the world and I wasn’t going to be satisfied,” the champion reflected.

Muhammad beat the odds by upsetting Edwards en route to a decision victory. As it stands, “Remember The Name” has yet to identify the most deserving title challenger but he could see himself only defending his welterweight belt twice and already moving up to middleweight to chase double-champ status.
