Belal Muhammad Eyes Leon Edwards Title Fight, Tells Kamaru Usman ‘There’s No Rematches Once You Lose’

"Remember The Name" isn't a fan of title fight rematches.

  • Belal Muhammad doesn’t want the UFC to hand Kamaru Usman an instant title fight rematch with Leon Edwards
  • “Remember the Name” has an impressive unbeaten streak and is hoping to be the next title contender

Given the history between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman, the UFC is expected to give a trilogy fight a nod. However, none of that is appealing to top welterweight contender Belal Muhammad.

No rematch in here

Barring the no contest with Edwards at UFC Fight Night 187 last year, Muhammad has gone unbeaten since 2019. Coming off a spectacular TKO victory over Sean Brady at UFC 280, “Remember the Name” is expecting nothing but a crack at the welterweight strap in his next fight.

Muhammad is also well aware that an Edwards vs. Usman 3 could happen, but for him, it doesn’t make sense.

According to Muhammad, Usman should stay out of the way for a second and let other top contenders like him take on “Rocky” next. For “Remember the Name,” a quick title fight rematch should not happen in top-tier organizations such as the UFC.

“If you want to make this a real sport, there’s no rematches once you lose the Super Bowl,” Muhammad said in an Instagram post via MMA Fighting. “You lose the Super Bowl, you lost the Super Bowl, that’s it, you’re going to have to wait until next year. You don’t get a, ‘Ahh, man. That was a lucky pass.’ Nah, you lost, you don’t get the rematch right away. You’ve got to go through a whole other season to try and get back there again. So, Usman, sit down a little bit, relax, heal up, [and] let me fight Leon Edwards.”

Rocky’s pick

Who will win the Edwards title fight sweepstakes is still up in the air. However, “Rocky” is open to a trilogy match with Usman, and also keen on getting his revenge on Jorge Masvidal, who landed a few cheap shots on the reigning welterweight champion in their infamous backstage altercation in 2019.

Muhammad has an impressive winning streak and is currently in a good position to fight for the title at the No. 4 spot in the rankings.

There is a good chance that “Rocky” will be in touch with UFC shortly to name his choice to fight next.
