B.J. Penn was arrested on September 15 2025 for violating a court order for protection filed by his mother, Lorraine Shin. Hawaii Island police responded to a report at 4:03 p.m. on Puueo Street in Hilo. Officers found Penn had entered a property against the order’s terms, where he is the respondent. He was taken into custody without incident. On September 16, Penn faced charges for the violation, with bail set at $2,000, which he posted. The order, effective until May 26 2026, bans Penn from contacting Shin or approaching her home. This marks his fifth arrest in 2025.
Penn’s Violation of Court Order Sparks Arrest
“Hawaii Island police arrested and charged 46-year-old Jay Dee ‘B.J.’ Penn of Hilo, for violating a court order for protection,” Hawaii police said in a statement. “At 4:03 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a violation in the area of Puueo Street in Hilo. Upon arrival, officers determined that Penn had entered a property in violation of the terms of a court order for protection in which he is the respondent. Penn was later located in the area and arrested without incident. On Tuesday, Sept. 16, he was charged with violating the order for protection. Shin filed the order in May 2025, citing Penn’s Capgras delusional syndrome, a condition causing him to believe loved ones are imposters. She reported psychological abuse, with Penn accusing her of killing his family. The judge granted a one-year order, requiring Penn to stay 100 yards from her home. Penn faces trials in October and November 2025. His last UFC fight was a 2019 loss to Clay Guida by unanimous decision, ending his career after seven straight defeats.
Her concerns began months earlier. Shin said that after one trip she discovered her bedroom had been emptied of her belongings. Days later, her purse vanished from a safe, leading her to file a theft report. On another occasion, she said she came home to find tape covering her security cameras and glue jammed into her bedroom’s deadbolt, leaving her locked out.
Shin later alleged that Penn had also taken her mail. According to her, the missing items turned up inside a vehicle tied to one of Penn’s friends. She confronted him and claimed he shoved her against the car while denying the letters belonged to her. Shin screamed for her other son, Reagan, to help.
Police arrested Penn after that confrontation and told him to stay away from his mother for 48 hours. The following day, Shin said he returned, and she provided video evidence to officers, which led to a second arrest in as many days.
The latest violation of the protective order did not involve physical contact, but Penn was again taken into custody and later released on bail.
