Ben Askren thinks some credit is owed to him for changing Jorge Masvidal’s career forever.
Back in 2019, Askren would be on the receiving end of the fastest KO in UFC history. Right out of the gate, Masvidal would blast Askren with a flying knee and a star was born inside the Octagon that very night.
‘He Needs To Send Me A Christmas Card’
Masvidal wouldn’t go on to win a title but he’d headline four straight pay-per-views after the quick finish of ‘Funky’. Askren believes he should get some respect from Masvidal for his massive surge in popularity. After all, it takes two to tango.
“Journeyman bum Masvidal became one of the biggest stars in the game. You’re welcome, Jorge.” Askren said on The MMA Hour. “If he doesn’t [appreciate me], he’s an ungrateful son of a b*tch. How about that?”
“He needs to send me a Christmas card every year for the next 20 years. If he doesn’t [appreciate me], he’s ungrateful. He probably doesn’t want to give me credit for anything. So, suck it Jorge.”
Askren’s Memories After The Masvidal Fight
Following Masvidal’s knockout of him, Askren doesn’t have much memory of what happened that fateful night. The former world champion did recall seeing Luke Rockhold in the hospital after the flying knee though.
“My first recollection there was — this is hilarious — I sit up and I see Luke Rockhold, and I’m like, ‘F***, that’s Luke Rockhold. That means I’m in the hospital,” Askren continued. That was what I thought, because I knew he already got knocked out by Jan Blachowicz. And I sit up and I’m like, ‘What’s Luke Rockhold doing here? F***, I’m in the hospital.’
“And then I looked and I saw my wife was over here, so I’m like, ‘What happened?’ And she’s like, ‘It wasn’t good.’ I’m not sweaty, I could feel like I’m not sweaty at all, I’m not sore, I didn’t hurt at all, so it was like, I must not have been in a hard fight or nothing. I kind of knew that.”
