An inspirational fight story to start your day: Amputee fighter Shea Taylor

I love coffee but I will never agree with Folgers claims that the best part of waking up is Folgers in my cup. The best part of my morning is something hot, dark, strong and Cuban in my cup. Let me just say right now before Juan Carlos Faraldo from Miami Hustle gets any ideas, I don’t mean him or Jorge Masvidal. Although that would make for a pretty great morning, real life Cuban greatness in my cup is Pilon Espresso. I want all of you to have a great morning too, and since I can’t invite you all over for a cup of Pilon and bread this morning the least I can do is show you an inspirational fight video to help you stay positive throughout the day.

You really can’t complain about much after watching this fight between Shea Taylor and Elvis Cruz that went down in Atlanta a few weeks ago at Wild Bills Fight Night 44. Shea is an amputee fighter. He lost his leg after a motorcycle accident in July of 2010 and underwent 12 surgeries in a five month time period to try to repair his severely damaged leg before finally deciding to go ahead with amputation in December of 2010. Prior to the accident Shea was already training and fighting MMA and had one amateur bout under his belt.

He didn’t let the fact that he had lost a limb stop him from continuing to train or fight. He was determined to get back in the ring and fight and found a local Atlanta doctor that helped him design a prosthetic that was fight safe and specifically for MMA. He got back in the ring last August at Wild Bill’s Fight Night as the first amputee to ever fight in a sanctioned fight in the state of Georgia and won in the first round. On March 9th I got to hang out WBFN 44 and see Shea’s third MMA bout and only his second as an amputee live. Although he lost via armbar submission to Elvis Cruz, as I watched I was impressed with his standup. The prosthetic leg didn’t appear to effect his balance or power at all. He’s got a ton of power and what looks like a promising future in the fight game.

Shea was able to overcome something much more difficult than that stack of work orders that awaits you on your desk. So stop your grumbling, check out this highlight video from the fight and get inspired to conquer your day. Props to Gentry’s MMA (Cruz’s camp) for creating the fight video and UndisputedProductions for a great night of fights.
